If you have yellow teeth, you’re probably looking for ways to whiten and brighten your smile. Little did you know, whitening treatments won’t help you as much as you wish they would if you don’t determine the underlying cause of the staining and stop it. So, our dentist, Dr. Paul Sommers, encourages you to do just that by pondering the culprits of tooth discoloration.

The first culprit of yellow teeth is your diet. If you consume tooth-staining foods and drinks often, like dark berries, soda, tomato sauce, and red wine, your tooth enamel can be stained. It’s best to avoid these things or rinse your mouth and brush quickly after consuming them.

The second culprit is smoking. Smoking is one of the top culprits of tooth discoloration. If you want a white smile, you need to quit smoking, have a diligent oral hygiene routine, use over-the-counter whitening products, and even receive a professional whitening treatment.

The third culprit is illness. Unfortunately, certain medical conditions and medications can cause yellow teeth, especially medications for cancer, asthma, and high blood pressure. We understand this is a tough culprit to avoid, but you can talk to your doctor or dentist to explore your best options of preventing stained teeth.
