Take Care of Your Toothbrush

Posted .

Brushing your teeth will only work how it is supposed to if your toothbrush is in proper order. It’s good to double check that we are doing everything we can to help keep our mouth healthy and strong!

First, toothbrushes only last 3-4 months, and should be replaced even sooner if they look frayed or worn, or if they become contaminated. It is important to always store toothbrushes in a well-ventilated area free of contamination, and without touching other toothbrushes. Toothbrushes that are dirty should no longer be used. This includes if you choose to share your toothbrush with another person–DON’T do that! Toothbrush sharing leads to serious cross-contamination of toothbrushes, sharing bacteria from person to person and rendering the toothbrush and the toothbrush time thoroughly ineffective.

Choose a soft-bristled toothbrush when it’s time for a replacement. Hard-bristled toothbrushes can damage enamel and gums and should be avoided. You can always ask your dentist for product recommendations! Or, look for the ADA Seal of Acceptance on specially marked boxes. This seal from the American Dental Association guarantees you are getting a quality product that is safe and effective.

If a regular toothbrush isn’t cutting it for you, you can choose to use an electric toothbrush! Some even come with timers, ensuring you are getting your full two-minute brush time, every time.
